Big Bend Ranch State Park lies just to the west of Big Bend National Park. It includes much of FM 170 between Lajitas and Presidio which has been called by National Geographic "possibly the prettiest drive in all America". It certainly can be, given your timing and taste. It was for us this trip. This new Texas State park is primitive, no paved roads or clear, available descriptive information. But, it promises, in time, to rival its next door neighbor, Big Bend National Park.

Pror to staying in the park, we spent a couple of days in the Fort Davis/Marfa, Texas area.

In Fort Davis, we stayed at the Hotel Limpia. This is a shot from the back. Bob & Cathy's room was at the bottom right-hand corner of the picture. It included a porch and courtyard

Our hotel room opened on to the front porch. We spent a fair amount of time out there planning our activities.
This is Bob Bass & Randall Smith enjoying the dinner experience in the Hotel Limpia Restaurant.

A self-guided walk around Fort Davis took us by the Fort Davis National Historic Site

and a lovely Catholic church where Carolyne lit a candle for Lalena.

The night before leaving for the State Park we traveled the 20 miles to Marfa and had dinner at the Hotel Paisano, where the film Giant was filmed, the building on the left. In the right background is the Presido County Courthouse. After dnner we went east of town to see the Marfa Mystery Lights. There is now a viewing center at the location. It was cold and windy, but we did see the lights!
