2002

The Next Generation!

The 2002 trip started out ominously! Breton Island was beautiful, but unapproachable for camping. We circled it looking for access to no avail. We also tried finding a suitable camping site on her sister island. It was unsuitable because of highly limited access. So, we returned to Venice, LA in hopes of finding an alternative campsite, with good fishing.

We did have to hang around Cypress Cove Marina in order to investigate new locations. Some relaxed more than others.
We spent some time discussing alternatives with local folks around the marina, and were very fortunate to benefit from the advice from one who apparently really knew what he was doing.
The prospective site was in a completely different direction, 25 miles away, but across benevolent Mississippi River waters, as long as shipping did not seriously impact our journey.

Our activities begin by looking for a suitable beach on which to camp.

Then we setup camp
and
settle in.
Our fishing starts with catching bait.
Normally we cast for mullet.
But, fiddler crabs work well too.
Fishing has at least three important elements: catching, showing and eating. We don't normally focus on taking pictures of the catching part for obvious reasons. But, this sequence of Richard catching this mammoth redfish on light tackle kept us all entertained for quite some time, and Bob had the forethought to gather up his camera and record the record-making event.
This trip produced mostly big redfish. On the right you see pete's double being caught. Below that is "The Point", which Randall & Ken staked out and jelously guarded. They caught probably the greatest variet of fish right there. If you enlarge the picture, you can see them fishing.
Most pictures are taken of the showing part of fishing. Following is a fair sampling.
Though not the most exciting part of fishing, nobody seems to mind the cleaning. And, everyone has their own style
With the cleaning done, we generally sit back, relax and observe our lovely surroundings.
This trip we had rain it seems like constantly. We had thunderstorms as well which held us in camp more than usual.
Some dinner prep may begin and maybe a game or two of horseshoes.
As the sun goes down, dinner preparation gets into high gear. As the sun goes down, dinner preparation gets into high gear. The perennial favorite is fried.
