Rialto Beach & La Push

From Clallam Bay This day trip took us south on highway 112/113 through the corner of the National Forest to Sappho, where we picked up highway 101. While stopped for fuel at this junction we had to investigate this really fine chainsaw art.

Just outside Sappho we took a look at the Soleduck Salmon Hatchery. The picture to the right was taken down the path in the left. It's a trap for fish returning up the river. They provide fertilized eggs for the hatchery.

Just north of the town of Forks, we took 110 west for about 7 miles and checked in early to the Manitou Lodge and headed immediately to Rialto Beach. First order of the visit was picnic lunch.

The sand there is very course.

After our picnic we spent a couple of hours on the beach strolling, staring at the 'sand', and marveling at the huge trees succumbing to the march of the ocean. Yes, this coast is subsiding too. A social hour and rest on the deck outside our rooms filled the time between the beach and dinner.
The River's Edge Restaurant is in La Push on the Quileute Indian Reservation. The wait was long and the food average for the price. But the sunset was priceless.
